Briquette Project

WUW ran the briquette project for 5 years and it evolved from an in-house Stroud District Council scheme to winning a national award in 2009.

Between 2008 and 2013 it gave away over 1,600  5kg packs of briquettes to the elderly and vulnerable of all ages in the Stroud District and sold approximately 1,800 packs. This means that over 17 metric tonnes of waste sawdust were saved from landfill during the lifetime of the project.

Current Projects

CSC-Asbl

Wood U Waste is working in partnership with the charity CSC-Asbl working in the South Uvira district of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite very difficult circumstances in this war affected region the charity is doing fantastic work, particularly working with women and children living in the displaced persons camp nearby.

WUW is delighted to be working with them on a number of environment enhancing projects.

The South Kivu Women Farmers Support Project (PAFA) is training women in basic sustainable and traditional farming methods to make compost, control pests, manage soil quality and reduce erosion, reduce food insecurity and combat climate change.

‘Seed the Future’ has planted 120 fruit trees (mango, avacado and papaya) in Uvira to help address climate change, soil erosion and create a valuable food source for the community. WUW is monitoring the success of this project.

A grant from WUW has enabled CSC-Asbl to install solar panels its new office building to provide renewable electricity in an area where supplies are often disrupted

The Makhad Trust builds wells to maintain the gardens and traditional lifestyles of the Bedouin living in the Sinai mountains. The area suffers terrible droughts which makes life intolerable.

Since 2021 WUW has given an annual grant to the Makhad Trust to create a fund to finance unexpected repairs necessary to keep water supplies flowing.

Past projects

In Africa WUW has provided grants for a new water tank and bio digester at Morning Star academy in Nakuru Kenya to provide toilets and enable the school to stay open.

It has also financed two water boreholes in the Masaka area of Uganda and a rainwater harvesting tank for a local primary school. Working with a charity called Believe and Achieve our grants have installed solar panels and waste water and food composting facilities at their site for orphaned boys.

WUW also supported our small and very sustainable vegetarian and vegan food business in France called Pois Chic Wood. It funded highly effective composting facilities, a waste water collection system and the conversion of an old barn to a greenhouse to grow a variety of fruit and vegetables in a sustainable way. An orchard was planted and a pond as an additional habitat to encourage wildlife.

Current projects

WUW is working with charities in the south East London area who share its values of recycling, preventing food waste and promoting a more environmentally friendly way of life.

The charity is currently forging valuable community links to explore where its funding can be the most useful.

Ideas include ‘community cook ups’ where cooks get together creating pop up meals out of waste food

Chic Pea

Chic Pea is a mobile catering service to provide delicious meals created with waste food at various community venues around the south London area. It’s first events will be taking place in Spring 2026.
